even back in Doom3 the engine just took the bump maps and made normal maps from them on render. Just stick with normal maps mate, bake them from a highpoly, or use tools like ndo2 and crazybump.

32,446%. No, seriously: it depends. You can have your highpoly sphere with 100 polygons and decimate it or one with 10 mio polies and decimate it. Just try it. If your decimated mesh looks good, the normal map will be ok as well.
I'm not sure if it's the camera angle on that last picture (lowpoly + normal) but the model looks to have lost alot of its mass in the process. Right now it looks like an anorexic version of the highpoly model. Other than that, awesome sculpt!
You can do the retopo, then the detailing, as long as your silouette doesn't change that much. Since you'll bake your details on your normal map you can do anything you want with your highpoly. Cheers!
Yeah, you're missing a whole lot of sharp detail in the final model. Show the highpoly you made please, because I'm only seeing the lowpoly retopo. Otherwise, I can't tell if it's a baking issue, or not enough detail.
There's a serious lack of hard forms in the highpoly source. Everything is a uniform, muddy smothness, whereas on your reference (as with most plastic or metal objects) there's a lot more contrast of forms. Don't be lazy and cut corners, model those shapes!
if your not interested in doing lowpoly game art why post here? also your highpoly stuff seams nicely modelled but they look like renders from the 90s. need better materials and lighting to be anywhere near the competition.
Thx for the help guys, here is what you asked and heres a link were you can see concepts and highpoly(Wip at that time)Crimz. There is really no need to show spec map since it was only a quick test so.
Latest: (more at the bottom) The Elder Scroll, based on a concept by Bethesda (I think); W.I.P. Highpoly: concept: http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2011/11/f868a61c882db85db3e55b550a4a623d.jpg Still need to add some more parts and check proportions, then off to zbrush for detailing. Any feedback is appreciated…
