if you're running low on time expecially in a production atmosphere I suggest mesh lab's Quadratic Edge Collapse Detection. It does a pretty good job of averging the tris. But it is still tris...and it can sometimes turn out messy where you have to manually tweak the geo afterwards. Here's a good run down off the splash…

HEY PETE!! yeah that really isn't a texture, its just different material groups and a multi-sub shader. Anyway, the mesh is 4016 tris or 2190 quads, with a few tris, I never am sure if people are counting tris or their quads for their polys, so I count tris just to be safe.
