Picked up a black 8.9" aspire one yesterday evening at fry's for $250 with the 160 gig hdd, been messing around with it and set it up with office 2007 / photoshop cs3. It boots up PS pretty damn quick. Having it on wifi's been useful for diagnosing some router issues we've been having lately. Big props to Acer for…
Hi! Perhaps you find some useful info on the Concept wiki page I think the base of many environment concepts is a 3d blockout. For example concepts could be done on top of renders of a greybox level, or the current level state to explore options. I think a crucial part when fleshing out an idea, whether 2d or 3d, is…
Block it out roughly and test it in game. If you don't get close enough to see the geometry you'd put in for a bevel, the geometry doesn't need to be there
Naughty Dog had this cool LOD they implemented in Crash Team Racing. They would model a door in complete 3D detail for close ups, and as you drove away, the 3D model would turn into a 2D texture, but it looked identical. And this was on the PS1. If they can get away with using polygons then, there's no reason modern games…
@Eric Chadwick Thank you for the feedback! I really get what you mean about the textures. I always wonder how best to group my UVs. I'll take this into consideration going forward!
I already use a default scene to set things in Max, but there's a few more settings I'd like adjusted on startup which a default scene doesn't seem to do. For example, the marquee selection defaults to the "Rectangular Selection Region" and I'd like it to go straight to "Lasso Selection Region" instead (I never get much…
Is there a setting in Polycount where you can have a longer login time? The reason I ask is because whenever I try to respond to a post it sometimes takes me a while to type my thoughts down and I also have a bad habit with posting a wall of text and after I hit the Submit button to reply I am prompted to login again. For…
Great job on the contest Matabus! That's an awesome way to make the community involved. Are the contestants judged by the quality of the presentation as well or only for their ideas? 'Cause it would be cool to see some crayon painting kid win and some of your inhouse artists could just polish his concept to a more…
Baking and Rendering in 3ds max Thought this thread may be useful to some people who wish to get better bakes/renders in max :) Over the years I have experimented with max and have come to a common ground where test settings allow a fast feedback with good enough quality to read errors. The production settings are at a…
Going to Necro this thread because I'm possibly working on the same art test. I'm trying to paint in areas using vertex colors, layered textures, and different UV sets. I've gotten this to work with the Diffuse textures, but when I do it for the Normal maps, they don't show up. It's either one normal map or none at all. In…
