Right. If you want to work in a gamma corrected workflow, it's all-in or nothing. Decrease brightness alone, and that's what you'll get, saturation is still strong. You have to take it all down. Did you read Martin's pdf?

This depends on your engine/renderer and style. Typically coloring your light source sitting that sits in the lamp would be the way to go.
