Not sure what the origin is, but they're common in D&D Lore. I remember a beholder appearing in the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon as well. -

Hey guys! Had been working on this in my free time for roughly a month now. I'm trying to squeeze in a couple of hours everyday. I've been doing screenshots every day so just a warning...
