how did you make it, did you twist the bark with cylinders in 3dsmax/maya 1st or did you just sculpt it? its pretty :)

I'm not sure about it, however I think you might have changed your uv for lightmaps by accident? I'm not familiar with 3dsmax though.

In 3dsmax you model that with splines, turn on render geometry, generate UVs (or use the sweep modifier) and you get nicely squared off UVs.

How do you straighten UV's like that in 3DSMax? Is there a common method everyone uses or do you have to put it into something like Unfold3D?

if you mean 3dsmax RTT dialogue it should be possible to define the custom UV channel to any number that is available in your poly at the top of the dialogue.

I run win10 at work and at home and I don't have trouble with autodesk software. Maya, 3dsmax, MotionBuilder and Mudbox all work for me.
