tgz, thats a good technique I do that too- whats good to do is make a new layer with grey and set it to saturation over the picture, then inbetween those layers make an overlay layer and paint with black and white to pick out the important areas and define stuff. then take off the saturation, maybe tone the overlay down…

Ged: I just create an empty new layer, then use the merge tool(select mesh) as usual. It should dump the new mesh into the new layer if you have that layer selected in the tree view.
