In aus you can get the intuos 3 as a student version without the pretty packaging. It just comes in a brown box and has no software but it drops at least $150 off the price.
in lieu of studio work, maybe contributing to some student projects would be worthwhile. Dunno, just a guess. perhaps better to put 100% effort into making best possible portfolio pieces and networking instead. But if you contributed to some sort of game project, at least there would be a project and team you could point…
