I now see this after answering the other.. simply: no. If you have a 2D texture then you can't simply pull this into 3D. It may work for example for some sand texture and you have somekind of sandheap.. but as mentioned: a brick texture changes if you "got into 3D" simply because the bricks are layed in some other pattern…
It's not hard to extract PNG alpha in Photoshop. Layers menu, Layer Mask, From Transparency.The alpha will be extracted from the RGB, and the alpha is converted into a layer mask. Still though, I find sometimes the RGB is destroyed, unrecoverable.
Well I wanted to use Mudbox's ability to sculpt on a layer and then erase/mask out sculpted areas on that layer. Can Zbrush do this? Can't see a way to erase detail on a single layer and not affect other detail.

Hey man, I don't know if you've fixed this or not, but this usually happens when your layer is hidden when you use Zapplink. Make sure all the layers you want to link are visible in the layers palette.
