If you have Max 2015 or newer you can use the "Select and Place" tool on the main toolbar to place objects on another mesh. A default install of Max will automatically download and install the latest service pack. I see this message quite often with my students when we go over MassFX (since none of them ever update anything). Getting that service pack always fixes the problem.
