This isn't a good plan. It sounds like you may have problems with problem solving when the answer isn't directly given to you. I don't believe going to school is a good idea. Have you searched in other areas other than Lynda for tutorials? There are plenty of great tutorials on Gumroad from current AAA artists who are…
I've been thinking exactly the same actually :P I've been working on improving my art so that I can look at AAA at some point in the future and I'm really interested in Sweden. Ryan Hawkins bigging it up got it into my head I think. So I've been thinking about going to visit for a long weekend or something to check the…
I agree with those who said make a project... you will learn so much from it. Along the way you'll want to watch tutorials/read books, whatever you need to do in order to accomplish your goal. Also make sure to get critique on your work, that's for sure! The finished product may not look AAA amazing, but do everything you…
Thanks for the response advice everyone. That makes sense. Hopefully I'll get some more opportunities in the future to get into a studio that makes AAA titles or console games. It's been my lifelong dream and I could not see myself doing anything else. Thanks again Alec and Mark for the next gen advice. And I want to give…
I was not talking about the quality of the games, because that is not a direct result of the amount of love put into the games, other things factor into that. I meant that its easier to go "yeah they put so much love into their games" when its just some random dude making his game, but people outside of the industry fail…
A level editor for a game jam?! Nice. I applaud the undertaking lol. Love me some game jams, about to participate in the Global Game Jam coming up on the 26th. Curious, are you guys doing over-nights at the studio for the game jam? Or is it just a strictly work day, based game jam? Awesome nonetheless! The perks of not…
Also depends on their power to pay. Indie companies obviously not gonna be able to afford AAA budget. Some people seem to charge by project. Like, $50 or $200 base pay + $5 or $15 per 1,000 tris or something. Some finished models could cost from a few hundreds bucks to a few grands, depending on the quality. Some go by…
The 3D mascot genre isn't a stupid thing to get into, trust me! We need more of it, they died a sad death and it's nice to see them make a return. It doesn't matter that there are big AAA companies making the same genre of game. In fact, look at Oceanhorn on IOS! It's a Zelda Windwaker inspired game, and it got very good…
@JonJo Great tip, I'll look up some Left For Dead graffiti and I'll try writing my own text with my wacom. There's actually SSS on my candles but I'm not totally sure why they don't really look that way. I'll have to investigate more into my material I'm glad you guys are liking it. I'm super happy with my progress so far…
Triangles don't take up much memory at all, it's texture resolution and frame buffers that take up most of the memory. Roughly estimating, you probably could have 100s of millions of tris on 4gb of vram (talking about unique data, not including instancing). Practically, quad overdraw would be a huge performance issue…
