Haha frenchie you respond like i said it was crap. Relax buddy, its very good modeling i just think it could be amazingly good if done slightly different. I guess that just comes down to personal preference tho really. Sorry for having an opinion on a messageboard =D
In that case, I'll answer some of the basic questions and then just write some thoughts and feedback I have related to the UTMC. If you entered but didn't finish, what was the primary reason? I entered and finished, so: If you participated in the contest, what was the primary reason? It was polycount's first 2D contest, so…

Set on easy if you want to enjoy the view without too much struggle, it's a real pleasure. And beautiful weather/clouds.

The fingers look a pretty flat. The second phalanx has to be more importance because it gives all the flow. The wrinkles of the first finger are too strong and the hand looks relaxed, they need to smooth. The nails require more detail as well as the last part of the fingers. Nice texture and good start, keep working!
Are you using 2018? There's the Circularize tool there and I think it's really decent. Further back you're not in luck. Prior to 2017 you had the flood relax mesh trick which got you close. You could always use the Sculpt deformer too but I've always found it a bit hacky.
It is worth it. I find that after a busy week at work painting digitally, I like to paint with oil during weekend or learn to play guitar to relax. One thing to note though. Painting with real paints is quite costly. It is an expensive hobby. Nevertheless, start off with as few color tubes as possible.
I think I would start with a planar projection and cut it in half to get a top and bottom shell. Maybe cut off the fingers and either Relax or Unfold horizontally, then start easing everything into place? It might take a good deal of selective unwrapping and/or work with the nudge tool, but you can get there.
