Have you tried remaking the matierial in the UT3 Editor, i found while making my second shoulder pads that they'd go black too and remaking the texture helped out. I've ran into similar problems like this on countless occasions using 3dsmax's render to texture for normals maps. If you dont have very accurate normals on the low poly model you will get smoothing errors.
