damn i would love to have my omni device work with it, working with claytools was quite an experience, even though the software couldn't compete with mudbox back then but a newer software that evolves so rapidly would be a nice thing to get this machine to work again

maybe you can make a suggestion to Andrew on his 3D coat forums http://www.3d-brush.com/forum/index.php

He seems quite open to considering peoples ideas. I dont know anything about claytools, the device isnt exclusive to the software that comes with it is it?

It is, that is the problem, the omni device works only with claytools and claytools only works with the omni device. sensable has no will to create connections to mudbox or zbrush either...

sorry to hear that neox :/

well I just tried the new 3D coat alpha 53 and primitives are in (just like me and ironbear were talking about with the yoshi head)

    heres a 10min primitive doodle

    Hohoho! That's great.
Makes me tink ... It would be kickass if ... somehow ... the program could remember where the edges of the original primitives used to be, and where the newly made intersections are located, like this. And then letting the artist apply desired bevel profiles to some of them :

    3dcoat_mockup.jpg

(I know, should post this on the 3dc forums ... will do later!)

that was quite easy in claytools you could just create a spline onto the surface and use that to chamfer the edges, as you felt the surface it was reaaaly easy to apply the splines where you wanted them

professional cad software can do that what you ask for pior. Sadly their "main" interface and the way you model requires a certain plan. You are obviously doomed in more organic stuff, but have to use nurbs and a like to keep the "high-level" knowledge of an object. But its pretty awesome that you have all the edges can apply chamfer/bevels, extrude... but well its more like building lego with a known outcome, as "going" back and changing major structures will break the system

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8_OkqG_l80&feature=related[/ame]

the software is called "nx" current verison is 6 I think, I used a older one at university. Basically you model in "features". you add features to surfaces/edges ... combine objects with others and so on. And it can remain all interconnected, so sometimes you just have to adjust, say a plane distance, and the rest will follow automatically... (depending on you having set it up in a good way)

the object type is called B-Rep (brep) which is advanced nurbs kind of object / solid. The guys who made powerbooleans for max also added such an object type and tools to 3dsmax, however the workflow looks rather ugly. http://www.integrityware.com/tutorials/Max/AdvTutorials/Adv_Camera/Adv_Camera.html

it seems to have a small flat bevel by default, the bevel looks a little scratchy when the object is created at an angle but looks perfectly good when the object is on the default axis - probably because of the voxelation.

cool idea pior, yeah make a suggestion on the forums Andrew really seems to be listening to peoples feedback. At the moment theres only scale and rotation tools, all we would need is an edge select and bevel tool.

its kinda wierd 3d coat is starting to look more and more like it could actually be used in nearly every part of my workflow.

it's definitely a thing of the voxelation, you couldd either (i'm no 3dcoat user, just watching with interest ^^ ) scale the object bigger or increase the density, if thats possible.

yeah I figured that and it does work to some extent. Its also good to remember that theres also the merge object tool so you can place any of your own home made primitives with extra bevel power in the same way as these default prims

hey I just thought since dominance war is starting its probably worth noting that 3D coat alpha has just got direct painting like bodypaint

heres the link to the lastest alpha on the 3d coat forums

It's much faster and directly on the normal map -- instead of sending the information into 'micro-vertices'. On a low res map you see far more of what you're going to get.

3D coat 3 is being released soon, its got alot of great features voxel sculpting and direct painting and retopo all function really well. V87 is the latest alpha to try.

Im personally a little concerned though because the interface is still looking like it was designed by a programmer and doesnt follow 3D application norms as I thought it would, the tools could probably be more refined too. Im willing to look past these issues and give it a try anyway but other people might find some things really frustrating.

In what way does 3DC not follow 3D application norms because I find it pretty intuitive to use compared to say bodypaint or zbrush.

Just curious really as the UI has come on leaps and bounds since V2-10-17-01

My only real grumbles with the app are that you can't have unique layer setups per imported model or material. Also I feel the brush engine could do with a lot of work but I'm hoping that Andrew continues improving things after V3.0 is released. It still doesn't feel quite as nice painting compared to Photoshop or Mudbox.

Yeah Andrew really punched it up the last few weeks with the UI. I would say just fix up some of the bugs and release it, then continue to update and fine tune both UI and the major feature sets so that people can really experience the kind of value they are getting over a product cycle and how much work he puts into the program even after you've paid for it.

I want to see more refinements too no doubt. I still mostly only like to use the voxel tools for creating and building up a mesh, not for finer detailing, and I'd like to see some tighter control over the brushes for that. And keep pounding on the paint tools as well. I'm torn as to whether I care about having uv tools or improving them as I have no problem jumping to uvlayout and back, but he's done such an awesome job everywhere else that I'm kinda curious to see what he could do with the toolset to make uv mapping better.

Oh I didnt mean to imply the interface hasnt improved, its improved greatly over the past few months its really impressive but for people who are new to the app and have never seen it before there will probably be a few things to get used to.

For some examples the voxel sculpting is all done from a flat panel of buttons(no icons like in other 3d apps) or the transform on voxel objects which uses a strange stick with red blobs as a gizmo to move the object and perform scaling etc instead of a more standard xyz axis with manipulators as seen in max c4d silo etc etc

Ive already mentioned these things on the forums :) they seem like a good little dedicated community over there.

That little stick is just a variation on the transpose tool in zb. That was the reasoning behind it when it was implemented as the pose tool. As an actual transform gizmo I have no idea wtf that same manipulator is being used. It should just be the same as any other multi-transform manipulator with pos/rot/scl handles.

Getting inspiration from the way *Zbrush* (I mean, ZBRUSH) does something, the irony! Haha. But yeah it would be cool to have a transpose thing for bending stuff around, but for core manipulation, gizmos all the way! I failed at rotating a cylinder last night :P

I have been playing with Coat and I love it. I used to use body paint ... I think 3d coat rocks my low poly paint needs. When I grow up and do rad art I will try to do something complex with it.

The retopo tools are my favorite part of 3d coat but I can see the paint tools have matured alot. some people are getting some quite well refined sculpts out of voxel mode but I should imagine they used a very high res voxel shape

dont really want to bring up any debate this is the technical talk section but it seems the 3D coat eula might be making some changes for the better soon.

this is what andrew(the developer of 3d coat) said on the official forums
We had internal discussion today. Really hard times. The main problem is that only consensus was required, just "most votes" was not acceptable.
    So, result:

    - that string from EULA will be replaced with line that is acceptable to everyone (closer to standards), something like "Production of pornographic materials is prohibited in correspondence to your country (or international) laws" - we will ask lawyers how is better, form is not so principial. We will not refer to God in EULA because it can't be legal requirement and not everyone can understand what this reference means. We will not control how 3D-Coat is used, but we will place images in official gallery in corresponding to our view how company's face should look.
    - new topic on official site will be open - "Our opinion" or "Our voice". We will tell our opinion there, just like opinion, not legal requirement (nothing offensive, you will see it soon, text is written by me personally). It is important to us because we have own opinion, we are not speechless. Almost every company has some "mission" or direction.

The main point is that intrusion is not good thing, we will not do this, peoples tired of intrusion. But it will be fair if peoples will know our way of thinking if they want.
Bible tells: "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." but not " In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see strictness of your laws and praise your Father in heaven." So we think that this way is better. It is not just "step back". I am sure it is more reasonable.

Just side note - Ukraine is far not religious country, there is full religious freedom, but recently new law was accepted in parliament (unanimously) - against production or even keeping lewd, pornographic and arousing lust materials. Who knows Ukrainian can read it there:

Nice to know they're updating the EULA to be more general and applicable. Not that it was really any big concern for me, but it was a bit weird.

It'd be like having some EULA in a piece of software that tried to prevent you from installing it if your computer was located in a basement, because the software developer hated basements.

The voxel sculpting is definitely very cool, I really didn't have enough time to properly test it before my trial time ran out recently, I will have to get the latest version.

hey, anyone been playing around more with this? I'm really really liking 3dcoat because of the voxel editing and nice retopo tools. Really liking the workflow of putting together a shape with the voxel tools by merging premade meshes, turning it into quads and then use that for a base to sculpt.
I quickly made this thing yesterday, a weird alien plant of some sort.. I've been doing more experiments like this at work but i cant show those unfortunately =).
    3dcoat_tut.jpg
Its a very simple shape, but this workflow can be applied for so much more complex stuff! The diffuse is crappy, but this took about 40 minutes in total to do! I'm thinking of getting a license for it, it's not that expensive =)

Peris : you could even do that simple starter shape straight in 3DC, using the voxel drawing tool "in mid air". It's very cool!

I hope there will be a wire cutter tool soon. Like, you just draw a stroke in screen mode and it slices the voxel mesh in half, deleting one half. Can't wait to buy the app and then suggest that to the author!

Yeah you're right, I just used this because I wanted to make a bunch of primitive shapes like this to just play around with in 3dcoat =). Could have also just created a cilinder and transformed it!

you can kinda do that right now, with the split tool, but its not really drawing a stroke, just pulling a rectangle selection over the part you want to split off :(

I love using it for blocking out forms. I just really enjoy doodling in it and if I can I start as much stuff as possible in it as it's so easy to block out even complex characters and pieces, then retopo those and finish them elsewhere. The initial freedom of sculpting without constraints is great. I'm looking forward to seeing the tools get refined now that 3.0 is out the door - maybe even becoming more useful for higher rez stuff.

you can already do that just go to the brush type next to the brush strength options and all that at the top and select the selction tools eg the rectangle or the lasso and then hold ctrl while drawing the shape and everything you selected will be sliced away

I've just started using 3DCoat recenty (mostly the paint and retop tools). Finding it great to use so far.
Just a question about using 'retop'. Does anyone know if there's a way to make your highres mesh slightly transparent? as I couldn't see alot of the new polys (hidden underneath high res mesh) that I had created.

you can actually adjust the Z-bias instead so the retop mesh will display above your reference mesh. It's located along the top bar beside 'Radius' & 'Additional Extrusion'
