max 2008 to max 7

Hey there PC

I'm working on an art test to get my first job, and the instructions I was given says that when I send out my files to them that it has to be able to open in Max 7.

However, I don't have max 7, just max 2008 - and I was curious how I would go about efficiently converting my file to an older version.

I know how to do it in Maya, but not max.

.3ds files? Can I alter the date file in some way?

Max 7? WTF!!! I wouldn't even want to work for them lol if they haven't updated tools in 5 years.

obj is probably the only option...

is fbx supported by max2008?

if so, that might be an option too

FBX is definitely supported by Max2008, i'd hope it's also supported by Max7, this might be a better choice than obj since it supports more data (vertex colour, animation, lighting, cameras etc). Dunno how good the Max7 FBX importers are though.

I'd go OBJ for statics or if you only need character+Uvs+textures. Is just less issues.

If you need to export rigged meshes....

There are some plugins... There was a Japanese I/O plugin for *.x. (that format triangulates)

I think in max 7 you had to have a plugin to do an fbx. Its still compatible but I think they would need the plugin and that's a chance I wouldn't take unless you know for sure.

There's definitely no way for max7 to open a .MAX file from max2008.

I would use .FBX (if max7 supports it, i'm not sure). Best thing is mailing the company directly, and ask, right?

Hang on, I happen to have Max 7 right here... (along with 8, 9, 2008, 2009, and 2010 - damn clients and their random versions.)...

FBX is supported. (Was still Kaydara at the time). I'm not sure if the FBX was via a plugin install or native, but FBX can be done.

In the FBX export settings, be sure to export using an older compatibility.

I could not verify if smoothing or multiple UV sets were coming across cleanly.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks.

I tried doing an fbx import in to max 8 but I freeze every time during the import's initialization, regardless of what settings i use.

guess I just have to start .obj'ing it

oh yeah, btw - forgot to change it earlier... i'm importing to max 8 not 7 ... my mistake
