hey guys. a friend (kelvin tan) and i tried to recreate a shot from id's RAGE trailer. we spent 3-4 weeks on it and pretty much split up the assets in half between us. I mostly worked on it during weekends because that was the only free time i had. A lot of room for improvement.

i want to add more to it during the next couple of weeks. what do you guys think of it so far?

its in unreal 3 btw. haha i guess you can tell by the stupid 'lighting needs to be rebuilt' message.

I havent seen the trailer, but Looks great! I like this environment.

I'd like to see sand and dust in the air... Also if this was dusk or dawn rather than high-noon, you might get more out of that neon sign? hmm. I like it either way though.

You should really try do something nice with the lighting, wouldn't take much work to have it looking a lot better. It's screaming for some AO love too of course.

Then do the usual post processing stuff, some colour correction/bloom/depth of field. Will help it look a lot more like RAGE.

Looking great so far.

yea, i shall relight this tomorrow. and try the dust in the air. only thing im not sure of is the AO on the ground. since right now its using some masks to blend between 3 different tiling textures.

Yeah , I would say the biggest issue in these shots is atmosphere. Throw in some VERY light fog, a lot of dust in the air. Get a nicer sky box, blue just doesn't cut it. Oh and the grass needs to go, it just comes off looking like random noise.

Other than that... maybe a little more control over lights? But on the whole I think its awesome.

I loved the look of Rage when the trailers first came out and I still can't wait to play it. This environment piece looks great, and I'll not say "you should add this or that" because you're still working on it. Instead I'll say keep it up and I'll look forward to seeing this thread being bumped when you get more to show us.

Just wanted to pop in and send some love your way, this is looking promising. Most everythings already been said: tweak the atmosphere, push the lighting a bit.

Also the terrain needs a bit of love. Look at the trailer again around 00:45. Get some of those cliffs and hills, along with the crags in the ground would push this along too.

Also I'd love to see a scene breakdown. Keep going, it's looking good.

To add I'd say that the grass also needs to be brighter, smaller and less "spiky" because now it looks not natural.

hey everybody, thanks for the replies and suggestions (and a guy from id! lol). I pretty much agree with all of them and i see how they can be improved. i just dread opening this file again, but one day soon i'll do it i guess.

Hey everyone thanks for all the critiques and compliments! You guys are definitely right, the lighting needs to be tweaked and the environment itself needs a lot of work. At some point, we are going to work on getting some new mountains and grass into the scene. This assignment was for a class and we were pulling a bunch of all nighters and couldn't get everything we wanted to get in on time. Some things got done really fast and carelessly(like the grass and the mountains).

But for now, here are some of the wire frames and texture pages. (Just for the record, these aren't the real RAGE presentation pages, just thought I'd reference the objects to the game in my pages).

In addition to what monkeyboy said, I'd say that you could improve your lowpoly models ALOT. I see alot of floating geometry with "heavy" polycount on the top of your base shapes which are following them almost perfectly. This could be done directly in the normal and by adding some extra cuts here and there to fake some volumes.

As a side note (but it's personnal), I'd add a little "fanart" near your big "RAGE" logo

Impressive work. I love the maps. Do you study scale between objecs and textures? You have to put more object as bags and container.
