Ike (need some advices)

Hello,

First, please excuse me for my approximative english, I hope everyone will understand me. :)

I'm trying to make a low poly character, around 1000 polygons.

My model is young Ike from Fire Emblem 10 :

Even if adult Ike looks easier to make, I choosed the young version because there is a lot more reference images for the young one (thanks to Smash Bros).

However, as a noob, I had difficulties, so I'm looking for advices, criticisms, comments, etc.

Here is my actual work :

And my questions :

1) How should I link the limbs to the body ?
2) Can I save polygons for the limbs without making the silhouette too sharp ?
3) How should I make the shoulders and the neck, and the head ? I can't see how to proceed.
4) Same for the hands, I don't see how I can get a hand, starting with a cylinder :(
4) I want to animate it later, what changes should I make to make it possible ?

Thanks for your help (even if as a programmer I don't have a lot of ambition, I think this is the right place to progress ;))
