Do Pro 3D Artists Paint Directly on Mesh?

I am wondering whether those of you who are skill with 3D Modeling paint directly onto the mesh with programs such as Deep Paint or GhostPainter? Why or why not? With Photoshop CS4 around the corner would you find the new feature painting directly onto meshes in Photoshop CS4 very useful for complex, highly detailed work?

i am so pro i paint directly onto the surface of the internet.

i use deep paint 3d, at times, to paint out seams on characters, it's very handy for tainty polys. i like being able to block out forms with it as well. i would find the new paint on 3d feature for cs4 handy. yesss.

it depends, when im doing props i dont use deeppaint or whatever, just use zapplink into seams if needed, sometimes isnt. If im doing characters and I do need some lead lines over a face i paint it at maya and go to photoshop, if i need something more accurate like realistic face i use photosource with zapplink. I already used bodypaint for a hair paiting, just that.

I personally don't much. The odd time if a seam is being a bitch I will, but generally I don't have much use for it.

But that's just me. There are definitely artists around who do so.

I've tried 3d paiting, and frankly, it feels easier and more natural painting on a 2d surface. Who knows why.

I use it quite a bit. It's good for blocking out a texture without wasting any time trying to remember what each little bit of wireframe is supposed to do or for just knocking out a lot of small textures quickly. I did all of the 99 animals in the Pony Friends DS game using Maya's 3d paint tool and it made the job a damn sight quicker than relying on Photoshop.

It's probably not as useful if you're working on more detailed textures, but for what I do most of the time, It's very handy.

I'd use enzo 3d if it would be cheaper. MUCH cheaper.
Here's hoping Adobe get Photoshop CS4's 3d painting right, although if cs3's 3d features are any indication, that's not likely to be the case.

But hey, positive thinking. Who knows, they might not cock it up!

edit: I'm no longer 'pro' though, ofcourse.

I wouldnt say Im totally pro but I use c4d bodypaint to clean up seams and sometimes if I dont have alot of time I find it good to rough out the whole texture in BP and then I refine in photoshop

I tried it a couple of times, but every time i found 2d painting more natural. Probably because then you can see everything at the same time, and make it all in the same quality. or it could be some sort of autism

Paint > Save > activate viewport, seems to work just fine. So far everything else has seemed pretty gimmicky and had one or two draw backs that made it unuseable. But I'm excited for Mudbox 2.0, but I'm not holding my breath that it will revolutionize my workflow.

used to do it in maya but just to paint rough lines, highlights and shadows - basically guideline stuff to do the proper painting in photoshop. Enzo would be nicer if it was cheaper and less bug prone.

One place where 3D paint fails is on lower-rez textures, like for mobile or Wii. Too imprecise.

I paint mostly in PS, but that's only because I'm a lazy fuck and haven't tried to learn any 3D painting tool, although I had fun with Z's polypainting

Used Bodypaint for about 80% of all the character art for Warhammer. Restricted uv layouts for armor sets make it a must for most of the texture work.

The problem with a lot of 3d paint tools is that they suck compared to photoshop. They over complicated a lot of things and then fail and very simple things, like drawing in a straight line, tapping the tablet then using shift to get strokes quickly, selections and working in layers leave a lot to be desired as well. They have a lot of good things though.

Lets see if PS CS4 3d paint tool are not another gimmick like in CS 3 extended. Up yours Adobe for making crap!!!

I just paint out the seams in Photoshop though.
