  you could always just type in manually via maxscript listener

  -- select current object's 1st vertex (must be epoly)
  polyop.setVertSelection $ 1
  -- select multiple vertices
  polyop.setVertSelection $ #(1,4,10)
  -- or #{1,4,10}

  -- select current object's 1st vertex (must be editable mesh)
  setvertselection $ #{1}
  -- select multiple vertices
