Portfolio Prop Assets

Here are few images of some prop assets I've been working on for my portfolio. I'll be graduating from the Art Institute of CA - Orange County in June, and I'm looking to become a prop/environment artist.

The bookcase and chair were done for a class project (two ornate 'person-sized' props), while the truck is for a grungy warehouse scene I'm building. You can see more images (and shots of the warehouse) on my website NickBrownArt.com. Crits and comments are appreciated.

Really good stuff, I like the attention to detail. I also like that your wood grains aren't running the same direction on every piece. I'm not sure if you meant to do that or if it just worked out that way because of the unwrap. But its a pet peeve of mine when wood grain goes right from one piece to another.

Yeah I like how the wood grains are being consistent and kind of bumped up with the little specularity there.. .

I presonally think the truck is a little dingy but its meant to be that way I guess...usually I add a little bit of cool colors to it.

Solid work dude. You did pretty well on the truck. My only crit is to break up the spec map on the furniture. Add a bunch of subtle white scuffs and scratches in the spec map and it should add alot to the assets. Good job.

I'm sorry I didn't get back to anyone yet, graduation is drawing nearer and things are ramping up a school. Here's an artillery asset I've been working on for the warehouse environment. Again, crits and comments are appreciated.

Very nice use of textures. I have on tip to make it more believable if you want. You can create a scratch brush to make the edges of your models even better, this way you wont let the hard edges being seen so much and make it more realistic, if you want i can share this brush with you.

The wheels look very strange , noticeably the treds. From a side view, they look fine, but from the top view, their seems to be no work in defining the form of the tred itself via textures. When a tire rolls over mud, dries, then rolls on dry ground, the highest points of the tred usually get wiped clean of mud, leaving fine dirt. The recess of the treds however, will still contain the mud because it will not get touched by the ground unless it rolls onto something were the ground is able to reach that far into the treds. Darker darks or more mud in the crevices will help the tires look more formed and realistic.

The normal map on the tires could use some work as well, maybe a little bumpy or scratches like the rest of the piece has.

Sweet artillery man!

I'd also like to see some flats, and I hope Bugo comes back to give us a tut on how to make that brush, I've been trying to find a good scratch type brush forever.

Oh I'm also curious to see your setup for rendering in Unreal. Just a grey subtraction? Or a black skydome or something? The renders in the engine look very sweet.
