3dmax9 rotation frustration

and lets not even mention the adumbration..

i switched to max9 from 6. in 6, 'rotation mode' was a keyboard stroke away to a very convenient free rotation. in max9, im supposed to click alt + middle mouse button. couldn't find anything specific set to alt+MMB in the costume UI menu, which means there's nothing to reconfig (apparently). the default rotation mode keeps giving me this annoying per-axis gizmo select thing, its annoying. MUST KILL

how can i get my smooth rotation back again?

what's wrong with alt + middle mouse? it's the only thing i use... dunno what you mean about the per-axis gizmo, haven't seen that...

you can stil use view roation with a key command assigned to "Arc Rotate View Mode"

Customize > Prefs > Gizmos, change Rotation method to Legacy R4. If you want, hotkey X hides the colored axes, and F5 - F8 for switching axes.

Eric: I thought he was talking about viewport rotation (arc rotate stuff like Crazybutcher said), rather than actually rotating objects themselves.

Yeah I thought so too. But then he said "per-axis gizmo select thing", which sounds a lot like the new object rotate gizmo.

You can also click on the ring for the axis that you want to use to activate it. Then hit spacebar to lock your selection, move your mouse anywhere on the screen, and the axis that you selected will stay active, similar to the axis constraints toggle. Incidentally, if you move your mouse over a blank area of the main toolbar and right click, you can bring up the axis constraints floater.

its okay now, this arc rotate view mode (!?) is apparently the old rotation mode

It's always been called arc rotate view mode, AFAIK (or at least since max5 anyway).
Also I'm pretty sure ALT+middlemouse has been rotate view since Max5 too... you should try getting used to that, it's much faster than pressing a button to toggle rotate view mode in my experience.
