I think the lighting model for the unreal engine is fine for games that lean more towards the fantastical and yes with some tweaking and a few workarounds you can mimic some of what’s going on in the Crisis lighting setup. Of course it would be tough to get the same digital video like fidelity they have going on with the Crysis Engine. When it comes down to it The Unreal engine was geared "no pun intended" towards what Epic does so well. Huge open environments aren't one of the engines strong points but over time developers are learning all kinds of little tricks to make this happen. I feel that given the next wave of games using the Unreal tech will look even better. One thing I'm eager to see is how good a Crisis engine game is going to look once it's on the console with optimized game assets, and then from there you can make a fair comparison. All in all where living in exciting times in the game industry!

A lot of interresting comments in here.

I think the Geometry shader is the biggest advantage of DirectX 10:

Finally realistic looking hair and fur in games?? smile.gif

Seems the cryengine will be ported to the PS3:

    aaaagh balls balls balls.

a crap engine can be made beautifull by the right art.
there are beautifull ds games, that utilise the all mighty power of the DS.

if a game is suited to its tech then it will work. try making an overambitous game on underwelming tech and you get turds on your screen. personally some of the most beautifull games i know rely on "out of date" enignes

Conte- vetrex lighting for the win. =P

personnally id like to see more flat shaded, no texture, games out there.

Really, I like the Unreal engine.
Cry Engine just seems too much for me. Overkill on my hardware, unless it's brand new, which mine isn't.
Console wise, If they can get cryengine 2 running that well on a console, than i'm all for it.
I just want a fucking compy that can run that shit max settings.
    That'd be tits.
