why can't I merg them right ; ;?

I was trying to create a bow with a half sphere (polygon). I deleted half of the sphere and then duplicated that half sphere and resized it for the inner surface of the bow. Then I try to merge edge... here comes the odd part. It's merging them twisted and fliped in direction so few faces are crossing each other and created a big mess. Can anyone please enlighten me... This got to be one of the noobiest questions I've ever asked... but I am so clueless as of now.

If you can show a picture it would help, but what it sounds like is happening is the normals are reversed for the inner part of the model so when you merge the edge it gets confused?

Thats kind of a round-about way of making a bowl. Selecting all the faces in the hemisphere and extruding them would be a lot easier.

Instead of merging edges you could also try merging verticies.
