I thought the update may have been to post this:

Anti-videogames campaigner Jack Thompson has withdrawn from the Grand Theft Auto lawsuit filed against retailers and publishers following accusations that he violated legal ethics.

Reiser is one of the other lawyers on the case. Jack expects him to carry the case forward (and imagines that he will be called in as an expert witness).

Look for this case to recieve be dismssed because of First Amendment issues.

I know that, but I meant that wording?

"Promised Land" could show a zealot slip or even a financial slip depending on the meaning.

I think it implies psychopathic self agrandizement. God lead Moses to the holy land and so in that analogy Jack IS god.

it bothers me when people say things such as, "don't get rid of jack thompson, they might replace him with someone compitent!" wtf is that? that implies they believe video games and media could be the cause of violence in children and feel they can get away with it because jack thompson is a loon. studies prove there is no connection with violence in video games you nuts! if you don't believe it, they aren't going to.

    Dekard:
here is an older report on youth violence in video games.
i'm not sure i follow your strip much, but your site is nice and your heart is in the right place.

it's easy to be railroaded by the internet, this guy just had an opinion and stuck to it. Then realised everyone seems to be against his opinion and he won't let it lie. Instead hes getting his back up over everything and anything said about him.

I'm sure he'll wise up and dissapear in time but he does seem to have made himself into a punch bag for the meantime.

Actually studies have found a connection with media violence in general and I forget the word... something with lack of empathy when said violence happens. The question is more maturity and parent responsibility.

the reports i've seen prove otherwise. do you happen to know which studies? i don't mean to pry, i am interested in the subject. i think all aspiring developers and developers alike should be concerned about the influence the games they make have on their audience to a degree.

Not anymore... I brought it up in numerous conversations on here, but no one ever bothered to read it, so I finally deleted it out of my bookmarks. It was a link to a doc research paper by I think a grad or post in a UK or Ivy League school talking about various studies and a link to if not violence, a greater apathy to it in the viewer. It especially focused on children.

The result of the study often depends on who is paying for it. Gamesindustry.biz had a nice article about that effect last week.

ALL media affects people in some way, perhaps in a minor way, perhaps in a major way. The human brain then deals with this choosing the appropriate action. If you see 10,000 people dying after an earthquake, you call a charity and donate. The media has affected you towards pity (and if you don't donate, repeated exposure will often push you towards shame.) More exposure will desensitise you. Keeping the charity analogy these leads to donation fatique.

Children are more likely to copy what they see and hear in media (hey, its even a part of the learning process). This is one of the reasons why some media has an age rating.

I read a Surgeon General's report about media violence from a few years back, and some studies showed that, at most, there were brief periods of heightened aggression after playing videogames. But who hasn't felt frustrated after being shot/KO'd/last place for the hundredth time? As any statistician or psychologist will tell you, correlation is not causation. They say that a lot, actually.

Whether or not videogames can cause children to act violently is a moot point because 1) we all agree violent games are not for children, and 2) human rights boards will never, ever green-light a scientific study of that kind on children.

"What the Japanese are doing to our kids is insensitive and racist. The Japanese have for a very long time dumped pornography into this country in a fashion they would not tolerate in their own country. It is another version of Pearl Harbor." -Jack Thompson

    [ QUOTE ]

JT: Sony is a Japanese company.
    .
GP: But Sony only makes the player. I don't recall you criticizing any of their titles in a major way. If you take that approach, wouldn't TV, VCR, and DVD player manufacturers be equally complicit? Since their products play violent movies and even actual porn? And are also needed to play video games? Toshiba, etc.?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Is this guy seriously this stupid? Pearl Harbor? Sony? Wah? I'm speechless.
