Update My first gun (texture w/o trigger)

This is the first gun that I've ever attempted. It is a russian yarygin pya/mp443 "grach" Polycount is a bit higher than I would like (2,384 tris) but it subdivides perfectly. I'm working on the uvw coordinates and then I will move on to the textures. I hope to have it done by the middle of the week.

Well it definatly has good shape, but I see alot of wasted polys. Mainly around the buttons and switches. You really shouldn't connect alot of those to the gun it self, like the safteh switch, because those move, and if they are connected, they pull the gun with it when they move. Connecting them also means adding polys to the gun to fit them in...so detaching them saves alot of polys and makes animation smoother.

So...in short, I would detach the buttons and snap all of those verts that you used to connect the buttons to the gun together, so the buttons are just sitting on the gun. It's a hell of a lot better then my first gun, keep it up

It's a nice model, do you have the ref?

I can see a lot of wasted polygons on the side of the barrel though... couldn't the details be un attached? Also inside the trigger area theres a lot of un-nessissary detailing, that perhaps would be unseen in any real application of the model.

Finally, the trigger guard seems very detailed with the exception of the middle area, where theres a sharp bend not a curve. Is this part of the design?

There's a lot of polygons to be saved here, however if this model is for meshsmoothing, how does the result look?

Bahh, I totally forgot to mention the "anatomy" of a gun. It seems you didn't realize that the top of the gun cocks back when fired and when out of ammo, like so:

Thanks for all of the crits. Alot of the reason for the extra poly's is because I didn't really plan the way that I would model the gun having never modeled one before. I really wanted a front and a back view of this gun to model from but I couldn't find any so I did it from just a side view.

I broke the one that I did apart and reduced the poly's (I can take it farther but haven't got that far yet). Here it is with the chamber opened.

Here is the gun with texture. I'll probably post a pic of it with the action open later. Polycount is 1,580. I think Thats the best I'm going to get this time around.

I had no reference for the hammer for this particular gun so I fudged it and didn't include it. There might not actually be an exposed hammer. When I get some money and can find someone to import it from russia I'll fix it up right.

the textures look really great. clip chamber is yucky, but it looks pretty good after all is said.

Does the texture have a spec and bump? Was a photo used in the creation of the texture?

killlingpeoply: I really should have spent more time on the texture but this was more of a supplemental, for fun, but still under deadline model

Vig: There is a bump on it but no spec. And unfortunately I can't take credit for creating the texture as it was from the photo reference (which also explains some of the specular inconsistencies). I did have to do a bit of cutting and cloning to get everything to fit, nothing taxing unfortunately.

Earthquake: Thanks for the tutorial site. Always good to see how others do textures. I'm self taught so I'm not familiar with established techniques.

Keg: Love the gif. Be cool to see one for a pistol with an unexposed hammer (i.e. glock, the grach above, or a gsh-18).
