512 vs. 1024

hello. just wondering if you guys could give me a little advice. i have 2 maps for a character(about 5000 polys). i want to paint in a lot of detail. i'm just wondering if you guys recommend using 2 512's or two 1024's. this model is just for show. it's not going in a game or anything. just portfolio stuff.

I'd recommend maybe just using 1 1024x1024 map.
What's the portfolio for?
If you want to get into console game art, I'd work with lower texture resolutions - go the 2 512x512 route.
2 1024x1024 only if you want to go really insane on texture detail - personally I think 1 1024 should be fine for a 5000-poly model.

Why not do two 1024s, and if you change your mind, you can always go to 512 easily. Other way... not so easy.

And if you've seen some of the PGR3 textures, two 1024s for one character is nothing to sweat it would seem.

What mop said. I was writing the same thing.
1x1024x1024 is a lot of texture space. If you want to think realtime go low, want to push detail go higher.

No way you should never use anything bigger than a 128, because people who cant put a lot of detail into a 128 clearly dont have any tallent whatsoever.

I can do more detail with a 64x than you can with a 128x EQ! So just eat it!

If your fretting about the resolution then I'd suggest you have some more studying to do in terms of how game art is needed to created.

Just because your not creating the work for a game, doesn't mean that it won't be jugded as if it would be used in-engine. The portfolio is to show you understand not just how to make pretty artwork, but also that you understand the potencial limitations engines have.
