I was 17 and it was the summer after I graduated from highs school. I pumped gas, cleaned restrooms, and dusted stock (mostly souvenir crap) at a Stuckey's located at a rural highway exit in Michigan.
My first job where I got money from someone other than my folks was in junior high school shovelling sidewalks of snow. I would watch the weather and on a snow day I would wake up at the buttcrack of night, knock on every door on the way to school and shovel their snow for $5 a whack. The early hour ensured these people would be in their pajamas, freshly warm from their beds and not in their right minds, plus not very enthusiastic about shovelling their own driveways which made negotiations easier. I usually had enough time for about 10 before school started and $50 in junior high school was enough to take my girl out about 5 times - these were 1985 dollars!
