What jobs can I get in non-gaming industry space? I have a degree in 3D digital design and have done 3d environment art work in the past. Mainly right now, I’m a game designer that does gameplay and some narrative design. I got some programming skills but I’m not a programmer at heart, I’m actually pretty bad at it if I don’t have help. I had to get a different job as a IT tech support which I ended up hating a lot and now I’m a personal trainer at a gym which is more of a sales job. It seems like my dream of working for gaming industry is dying because of how bad it is now.

I have thought of working in architecture visualization or some kind prop artist for non-gaming studio? What about film industry? Or is it bad everywhere?

    Oh hey!

I used to work in game dev for many years, and it was great as a career, loved the creativity and the lively team environment.

But yeah there are a ton of opps in many other industries for 3D skills, and plenty of creativity & skilled teams to work with.

Michael Tanzillo from Adobe has been doing this whole newsletter on 3D job verticals, pretty informative. Let me find the link…

Yeah I wish it was still the same today with the gaming industry. It’s sounds like you had a blast. I still make games at home and I guess I’m still hoping it will get better some day. I’m working on that portfolio site.

    Thanks for sharing the link!

Could I get a job like doing prop art with a decent portfolio? Is the barrier of entry easier than gaming industry? Like it’s been a nightmare for me networking, going to game dev conventions, updating my portfolio to make it so good, and yet still can’t land a job because it’s so competitive and the job usually lands to someone who met someone at a game dev convention since the required experience for a entry is like 10+ years of experience required. Well actually I have that experience now since I have been making games on the side for 10 years at home…

Barrier is lower in most other industries, because everyone wants to work in games or visual effects, so those fields are overflowing with applicants.

But yes, it's still true that jobs often happen through personal connections.

Also, where is your portfolio? I can't find the link anywhere. Why isn't it accessible in your sig?

I had to shut down my website recently (for complicated reason, hard to explain). I’m currently rebuilding it and moving it to new web builder. It should be up soon.
