Hey everyone!

I’ve just started blocking out my major project for uni.
It’s still super early in the process, but I’d really appreciate any feedback or suggestions on the proportions, structure, or overall direction so far. :3

Ohh, this is very cool! I love concepts by Longque Chen, his whole series on mechanical fauna is brilliant. =)

I'd recommend to get a human-sized mannequin model into your scene so you always have a real life size reference. That helps a lot with keeping scale in mind. Also makes sure that the overall size of the model is correct.
Right now the connecting part between head and body looks a bit too small and the first leg segment attached to the body is too flimsy and thin. Take your time with the blockout, make sure the proportions are all set before you move on to detailing. Awesome project!

    Thank you so much! 😊

I took your suggestion and added a human mannequin for scale reference, which is actually super helpful! I also reworked the neck connection and beefed up that first leg segment to give it a more grounded feel.

And I did a bit more blockout overall as well. Here's the updated mech...

Always open to more feedback if anything else stands out! 🙏

and for the ATGM, I kinda took the executive decision to use the 9M133M Kornet-M, which is a Russian anti-tank guided missile (purely based on aesthetics)

Lots of proportions on smaller parts feel off, like a lot of pistons and cylindrical joint are too thin and too small. The hind limbs are completely different in the concept. Front guns also look different. I'm not sure I would have changed the rocket launcher, I see your refs for it but the concept is different. Hope this helps!

Hey! Thanks a lot for the feedback, really appreciate you taking the time to break it down.  :3

And yeah, I’ve actually been working on those corrections. I beefed up the pistons and joint cylinders and made some proportion tweaks across the smaller mechanical parts. Also reworked the hind limbs to better match the concept’s structure.

Totally fair point about the rocket launcher and front turrets! But for my uni project I’m kind of grounding the mech in current military hardware cause the theme I chose is parallel present (imagine a universe where hoverbikes and F-15s exist together), and so I took some liberties there to align it with real-world references. But I might do a version that sticks closer to the concept too, just to compare and see what reads better visually

Thanks again, super helpful! Let me know if anything else stands out. 😄

I made some more progress on the project
I started working on some details

    1. The electronic warfare suite

    2. The Thermal sight

    3. The hatch

    • 4. Head
    • The head is very much a wip, I have just started working on it, am pretty much done with the shapes and the bevel, will take it to zbrush now

    Hey everyone! 👋

I’ve just started working on the texturing for my major project and wanted to share a WIP first draft to get some early impressions.

This is still very much in progress, so please excuse the unfinished areas, especially the rear hydraulics, which I haven’t started yet. The front hydraulics are a good example of the look I’m aiming for across the entire mech: slightly weathered, grounded in realism, with some subtle grime and wear in the crevices.

Would LOVE to hear any feedback you might have, about materials, color balance, roughness values, or anything that feels off.

Crits are very welcome and appreciated! 🙏

Thanks in advance—I’ll be updating this thread as I refine things!

eek!  lol, your splintered UV layout make my eyes hurt   B)

Anyway, I'd also put a few hydraulic hoses in there for readable plausibility, hmm...difficult to tell from that concept but I think the artist would've added them and as for grungy weathering, heavy machinery especially real-world stuff tend to attract grime/dirt like no ones business. Usually clumped around area's where oil and/or grease would often build up over time plus working surfaces might also pick up some contact ding's or dents aswell.

Thanku so much for ur feedback, ya i was told that am not supposed to have "circles" in my UV's so i just went all in. :s
and the hydraulic hose makes so much sense; I will definitely add that in the pipes/cables layer and yupp will get right back to some more localised weathering, i guess i was holding back cause am just really concerned about overdoing it and making this entire thing a museum piece as compared to an active war asset, but yes, I totally forgot about the impact of the physical scale of this model. Thank you so much for pointing that out!!!
