cool idea using custom normals/edgeloops for details. (if you wanted to go full spartan you could try pure vertex colors for the textures on one of these...)
that said. some geo can be reduced on the minor mech parts. you probably caught it but a fold is clipping through the belt buckle.
Haha.. you got it right! Custom Normals is the way to go... :) and what we're seeing here is the texture already baked, just going to add some colors in Krita... SPARTA LIVES!
