Hi everyone, today I finished rendering this portfolio piece I've been working on for about three months now. I'm trying to get it as high quality as I possibly can.
I could really use some feedback as I'm having a hard time seeing it for what it is after working on it for so long.
Original concept by Bruce Yu.
I'm really curious to hear what you think about the material as well as the renders (lighting, composition), and how it could be improved further!

this concept is a lot of fun, good modeling and really nice material work as well.
Thank you! Yeah the concept is great, I had a lot of fun working on this 😀
Love it! Really have little else to say. The stock feels a bit blocky but I can see that that is just down to the concept. Great work.
That really means a lot, thank you!
I love it. How did you create those subtle water/rust marks that seep down the holes of the stock? Those were really nice additions.
Those details were added by using a fill layer with a black mask, and adding dripping rust decals to that mask. I'm glad you like it!
I would top it off by turning on the light bulb as well as all the other smaller ones. It would separate it more from the dark background as well.
You inspired me to take it one step further and add the lightning inside the lightbulb. Also created a short animation for it on ArtStation: ArtStation - Mad Science Gun
Thank you for your feedback!
I was imagining it with more glow. Like it has some real power behind it.
I also imagined the light being yellow/orange but it could be blue as well. It looks like you have more glow in the animation than the still images. Just add that glow amount to your stills. Make sure to light the small bulbs with the same style/consistency as the big one.
I’ve been experimenting more with the glow settings and when comparing to the old version I have to agree, there really was no power behind it. I’m having a hard time finding a sweet spot though, I feel it’s easy to have too little or too much glow.
Either way here’s what I came up with, I'm curious to know what you think.
I think looks cool!
You could have renders of the gun in different states. "Off", so one can observe the model and surfaces without distractions, "charged" to get a sense of the gun in action.
Much success!
Awesome.
I kind of like the small bulbs being blue and big one being yellow most. It's all up to preference at this point.
Nice work what is the poly count of the gun sir?
Thanks! The polycount is 122k
