That's typical for inhouse editors to be made to look and act like an industry standard software. At one company I was at back in the day they had a pretty full featured inhouse modeler that looked just like Lightwave... for reasons I don't have to explain only the old schoolers used it though.
This one here looks like some kind of pipeline 'hub' with a bit of extra functionality that they found lacking in other tools (e.g. the grooming) and added as their own spin on the topic.
They are using the similiar UI probably do drag in those Maya users who are confident with Maya. Dont like the Maya UI. But I think its a "smart" approach, a little bit boring, but smart.
i wish that the UI´s didnt have so much clutter nowadays and more context sensitive tools\shortcuts. I applaud the initiative of this project and will keep a close watch on it :D

this looks like a modded maya. like icons, shelves, timeline editors, thats all maya

It's a full fledged USD editor. Watching with interest.
Why in hell they decided to model the UI after Maya is beyond me.

This is aming for the animation market, it would be intesting to be a fly on the wall in an Autodesk/Maya/IP meeting.
