I signed up for CGMA realistic character course with Peter Zoppi, as part of my Level Up programme at nDreams Ltd. where I currently work as character artist.
I have decided to make this separate thread to have some record of the process, because really, you have to fall in love with the process more than with the outcome, take notes
My choice for the course is a german WW1 general/field marshal based on August von Mackensen, with other references in more HD quality such as Christopher Plummer from 'The Exception' movie, who played Wilhelm II Keiser .. - awesome resource
THIS IS NOT A LIKENESS! More of realistic take for film and cinematics
And here it comes, week 1 - blockout... it starts with the sphere in zbrush then Marvelous Designer, then bit of Maya.. aaaaand.. to be continued..

Also, this is not a likeness course, and I won't be focusing too much on correcting him to look like Mackensen, we have no time to study likeness, it's just a point of reference for the cinematic character - and that's quite a lot to cover for me, already, my first one.
I made a very basic sketch for the body, to get the posture right, and quickly blockout clothing, it's likely I'll make lot of mistakes
I notice now his sword:
for some reason I like him in B&W
Yes, I can see the likeness mistakes, the eyelids skin should fall down, not up, the nose lobe is too low, the nostrills not wide eough along with nose skin,,, that should communicate with nostrills.. the skull a bit too round at the back..
gearing up for week 5
Next week we'll be doing scultping, so more definition to the outfit and accessories.
I revisited the outfit in MD, and have doen some adjustment to the body and cloth for more accuracy, I hope, I suppose his height is right, although narrowed his shoulders, and thinned belly a tad as well, despite his hunch/curved old pose, here's new base outfit:
otherwise is just modelling bases for his accesories, nothing to show
fur on busby is just placehoder in Zbrush (quick fiber mesh)
if anyone is interested in any part of this and how it was made, I'll be happy to make a video, just let me know, cheers
still need to do the fur on busby, and hair fuzz oon clothes then look up if I can cotrol hair shading this week
in order to finish this course on time, I am focusing purely on the top part of the character
adjusted the busby shape and made few minor corrections
Time to move on..
Wow that's some impressive work!
Did you use MD only for a base model and than adjusted it in Maya?
A video of the process would be a great learning experience, for me atleast haha.
@Zoddo Hey, glad you enjoyed it. This was a slightly different workflow than I normally do Zbrush-game ready. I'll be happy to make a video on that process :)
