[Q] Simple AO to Vertex Colors?

Curious if people have smooth workflows for this. Maya makes it a pain. Mental Ray 2018 seems like the best option, but the quality it best is iffy.
3DCoat makes a nice lowpoly AO but then I can't bake to verts.
Any suggestions?
