Bake 3d grid

Wondering if will be possible to bake the whole geometry of this grid used as a step in a staircase.
Not an expert but knowing normals can shape surface properties, wondering if will work also on a so deep grid.

Not to a plane. You can't bake something that's perpendicular to a surface

Parallax mapping could do something like this. But usually that's more expensive to render than simply just using a bunch of vertices.

well you can angle the highpoly rectangles so it looks like it has depth from one angle which can work well enough if its used that way
