Animated clothes

I am trying to use some clothes I made in MD with an already animated character. I use the skin modifier on the clothes in max, and attach the bones needed, but when playing the animation I don't seem to figure out how to get an offset from the actual geo, so it goes slightly inside the body at times, which do make sense since its attached to the bones. Is there a way in either max or ue4 to get an offset from the geo?

I am also new to animation so I am not sure if this is the correct way to go about, but it do seem to be only an offset issue at this point. It follows the animation nicely.
