Need help with something that is supposed to be easy

Hi guys i got this model i made but now i need to give it thickness inside to print it. I tried with a shell but it didnt help. Any ideas? I work with 3ds max but if u know about other software to do this accurate ill apreciate. Thanks!

In maya I would have the entire obect selected and then extrude.

Not sure how object/component selection works in max but basically you want to extrude all the faces at the same time. If you extrude in the negative direction you'll have to reverse your normals afterwards.

Why didn't Shell work? Here's another way to do it in Max:

select all open borders>create shape from selection

cap all borders

clone the mesh and scale it smaller that the original(to the difference thickness you want)

boolean the clone from the original

apply shell mod to all the shapes you created earlier from the open borders

boolean them from the main mesh

This can be done in Zbrush a number of ways. Do you have access?

You need a solid mesh. Extruding leaves all the backfaces open. This is what Shell mod in Max does, it creates a thickness mess.

dang, that is why max seems so complex to me. In maya you just use extrude on the object and it createst the backfaces automatically.

Is that a special extrude tool in Maya? What if you want to just extrude edges to planar faces?

If shell isn't working try resetting Xforms first.

Sorry, I know this is a little off topic, but if somebody has same question for maya this might help.

Not a special extrude tool, just have entire object selected and extrude. Ctrl+E is default hotkey. Can also select all faces and same thing. If you grab a single face and extrude is does not automatically cap off the back, because that would make a (not sure of technical term) weird geometry. So I guess it's like a "smart" function. Faster than duplicating, scaling, and bridging the edges.

yeah, probably part of the reason people say maya is no good for modeling. Once you do something like this you cannot toggle it on and off so easily.

how about duplicating it, and resize it (the inner part) and then bridge the edges?
