It took me forever to find the floor plan's that matches the Jupiter 2 Set on the tv show. After watching clips of the show, I think I found the right ones.

Unreal and Unity engine aree free to download and use for personal use. It's also one of the two largest engines that a lot of the game industry uses to make your favorite games

Download it. Get on it. Learn how it can do a lot more for achieving your vision.
You're going to have to understand and learn about post processing volumes, light maps, baking light maps, LODs, etc.

You're going to have a heck of a terrible time trying to juice the most out of 3Dsmax's out of the box renderer. If you want to continue struggling with it, you can do that. But easier, more powerful solutions lie elsewhere.
You're probably over thinking how easy it is to add lights and assets into a scene in Unreal. If you can navigate Max, you can navigate UNreal. Don't talk yourself out of it.
It's the difference between trying to hit a 100 yard target with a nerf gun vs. a bb gun.
Yea, BB guns are more expensive and harder to operate.
But what's going to do it more easily?

Do you have Global Illumination on, Screenspace AO, etc. int he renderer?
Otherwise, you've got something that's around a Toy Story 1 era fidelity instead of Incredibles 2.
You should look into the previous years' posts of environment art. There's a wealth of information there you can learn from.
