I made this based on a concept by Colin Geller for Polycount's Environment art challenge for the months of July and August. I had a lot of fun working on this and it ended up taking me quite a bit longer to finish since some life-related things happened. I used 3DS Max, Substance Designer and Marmoset for this project. I learned a lot and I know there are things I could improve upon but it's gotten to the point where I need to move on to other works. Let me know what you think, please!

Looks really good! I think that this part has got too much contrast in roughness map

Hey man, you can tell you put a ton of work into it. Keep pushing yourself on your next projects and try bringing the quality up to professional level. There are a lot of aspects of your finished product which are quite different than the concept, including the silhouette, large details, and small details. It was a difficult challenge, I know for sure. You could have added a lot more polys here, especially if this if for a portfolio. The satellite looks like it could be a hero piece, and when I finished my satellite dish, it was close to around 50k tris.

I feel you should have spent more time on the block out, figuring out the true shapes of each piece, how different pieces work together, and how pieces attach/intersect with each other. Right now, the entire top piece (the 'dish' part and the wings) are all made of one piece, but in reality (and in the concept), it's made of several pieces and panels. The rods just intersect through the top piece, when if you look at anything in mechanics, it's going to be more complex than that.

Regarding the texturing, there is a lack of material definition, and in the presentation, the colours need to be adjusted (maybe in post?). I'm not sure if you applied colour theory to this work, but I'd suggest reading up on that. It'll make your texturing go the extra mile.

Good luck on your next project! I hope you do another hard surface to really push your skills further :)

Yeah, I definitely could have spared some more polys, in the end, it was around 32k polys. I definitely feel like I could have done better in the earlier stages to set myself up for success later on. It is was it is though, if I feel like opening it up again and redoing things then I guess I'll take a crack at it but for now I'm moving on and you know it's going to be another hard surface, can't let one tricky asset steer me away. Honestly, color isn't my thing and I can't match colors very well because of my vision but I'll read up on color theory. Thanks for the reply @Ashervisalis
