Hi everyone,

I've recently graduated from my 3D Artist course and am looking for some constructive critism on my portfolio. Personally i feel like a need to delete some of the work because i dont think the quality is to a standard i would like but i am always very self critical with my work and always want to make changes when i should probably leave alone.

I'm aiming to get a placement in a company and am sending out this portfolio with my CV so need this to be perfect.

Thankyou all in advance for taking your time to critique my work.

I think what you need to do is find a 3D artist on Artstation you like and try to get as close as you can in quality to their work. See what it is that you're doing differently. Choose a small object or something not too complicated and really push the quality. If you find that difficult, find a tutorial from an artist you like and follow it, seeing what it is they do that you're not doing. Really try to push for accuracy.

Thank you for you fast and great advice Panda and Spannerz. I've done as you suggested and deleted the pieces you said, I updated the pictures of the top left character sculpt.

Im going to update the Gun and Minotaur sculpts through the week and make them better.
Thank you both again for the critique :)

If you intention is to be an environment artist, you should focus on your environment pieces and show them.

I agree with RustySpannerz, you should pick on something small and simple, and push to get the quality up.

Thank you so much for your feedback!. I'm currently working on a Geralt of Rivia sculpt from the Witcher franchise which i'm struggling to get features to align properly but its getting there. I do much prefer creating Environments but trying to land my first inhouse position i wanted to display a range of skills. Which may be completely foolish :cold_sweat: .

I will however will definitely be creating more small diorama's and really refine the meshes to get the quality where id like it to be.

It is not foolish to display a range of skills, but you should focus within a single discipline. By trying to do characters you are spreading yourself too thin. There are lots of things to learn just within environment art itself! I would recommend stopping the Geralt, unless character art is something you really want to pursue.

It looks like you are starting to get some of the basics under your belt, which is great, but you are not at an employable level yet.

Pick a prop, it doesn't need to be super complex, and finish it to a high standard. Look at work that inspires you, and think objectively what makes it good. Try and apply some of this to your prop. As I said before, there is a lot to think about so don't expect to get it right straight away! Believe in yourself, put in the time, and you will get there!

Pick something that's well designed though.

Hey everyone, thank you all for your great suggestions. As i mentioned earlier I'm working on the Geralt sculpt and it was recommended i move on and start working on environment work.

I spent a couple of hours today trying to finish of this sculpt and this is the stage I've got it too.
My personal opinion is it doesn't look bad and you can clearly tell who its meant to be...
However i still think there are areas that need more work and tweaking but i also feel that to get those tweaks just right gonna take me a while and i dont think its worth continuing further as it will be a waste of time i can spend working on other things.

The question is: is it worth me rendering a few stills and a turntable of this model for my portfolio or is it not good enough in your opinion.

again many thanks for all your comments, feedback and suggestions been a real eye opener!

That's not worth it.  You're at way too high a subdivision level to justify detailing as you're missing medium forms of the face, like the muscle curvature under the lips. Whole sculpt reads overall as muddy.  Forehead wrinkles don't have that kind of curvature going into the line.

UNless you're planning to spend inordinate amounts of time to make this look better, I'd move on.

This is marginally better than your character development study, which should still be axed from your portfolio, but it's suffering the same issues as I stated above.
