Portfolio with various skills of expertise

Hi everyone.

I have recently graduated with a master's degree and I am building my portfolio to get into the games industry, ideally as an environment artist. Throughout my studies I have gained many skills and apart from environment modelling, I am also proficient in areas such as cgi/vfx, character modelling and texturing, rigging, skinning, animating, I am an expert in Unity and have a working knowledge of C#.

I have at least one project with previously mentioned skills and my question is: should I include all of these works on my portfolio or should I solely focus on environment art? I was first aiming to go into a 3D Generalist job but I'm not sure whether that's a good option as not many studios are offering such position?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Adrian.

Depends. If you're aiming for smaller studios, generalist skills are in demand. If you're aiming for big studios, then specialization is key.

There are more smaller studios than there are bigger studios, but it's harder to find them, many don't advertise widely.

Post your work in 3d Showcase, or make a Digital Sketchbook. Get eyes on it to give feedback.

Edit: I started as a generalist, then transitioned into a specialist later.

    Thank you for your reply.
I don't expect that I will get a job in a bigger studio and I think I'd even prefer to start in a smaller one then build my way up.

How hard was it to get a job as a generalist and what do you specialise in now?

    I started a long time ago. http://polycount.com/discussion/200082/working-in-game-art-for-26-years-interview-with-80-lv

The one bit of relevant advice I'd give from that experience is to be persistent, and focused.

In games I was an environment artist. Check my signature. Now I'm in visualization, not in game dev any more. Still environment art, in a way.

Check the sticky at the top of this section, some great links to help decipher it all.
