Low poly topology question

Hey! I'm wondering if I should model this pauldron into one water tight mesh, or model and bake it separate, and then crash it into the cloth mesh below. Cheers!

if there are no restrictions i would model all as seperate objects in the lowres... the rigging department loves that...
