Halo Reach - Designated Marksman Rifle

Hey guys,

I'm working on the DMR from Halo Reach for a Arma 3 mod, as well as a portfolio piece.
It's slightly altered to support attachments in Arma. Maybe I will add iron sights too.

Currently looking for some feedback on the high poly, so I can get started with the low poly soon.

I want to start applying for a job in the game industry soon, but I don't know if my work is up to standard. For anyone that has experience with this, I would greatly appreciate your thoughts.

Here are the first bakes fresh out of xNormal.
Finished with 12688 verts, so I'm nicely under the 21k limit Arma has.

Still have some bleeding errors because I haven't exploded the mesh yet, I'll get the attachments unwrapped and set up before doing that. Then all that's left is creating some extra maps like cavity and curvature so I can finally start painting!

looks nice! try out substance painter or marmoset toolbag 3 for baking, no need to explode anymore which is such a blessing for complex pieces

That is amazing dude! I just baked some maps in substance painter and it works like a charm. My low and high poly are one single mesh so I still have to detach and rename every element for both which is a real pain. Still beats exploding by hand any day though!

exactly, for future projects just try to name them right from the start and you're good to go at the end! exploding is soooo time consuming and frustrating indeed

All that's left are the magazine and some rounds before the real fun can begin

tiny nitpick but i would maybe increase the size of the hole in the barrel a bit

Thanks for the feedback! I agree it looks small, but the bore of the barrel should be the same size as the bullet. Everything is modeled to scale so this would be the most realistic..

I'm think I'm pretty much finished

I'm not really happy with the glass on the scope but other than that I'm really satisfied with the end result.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback to improve this piece!

The whole model feels ... flat ? There is no variation in the gloss/metalness, it looks like a gen 7 console material. It's a shame because the modeling is really nice.

I agree. I tried to make the steel a bit less dirty and more shiny to get some variation. There is a lot of roughness variety already, but it's not really visible without seeing light move across the surface.
