Hey everyone. I'm back. In the midst of learning and practicing my anatomy I thought I'd get familiar with faces. Hopefully I'm not getting ahead of myself but I decided to do a likeness. This is a face sculpt of Patrick Stewart.

I'm on secondary details right now. I've reached a point where it's time to open it up to feedback. Any critiques you have would be awesome!

Also, I'm debating whether or not to display the back of his head. Really the back is the only angle I'm not sure about. What are your thoughts there?

I would have recongised him as Patrick Stewart without you telling me. That should tell you, you've done a good job. Its hard to make any crits without seeing your references.

Okay, here we are on tertiary details. I've added the skin pore, deep wrinkle and lite hair follicle textures. Thank you so much again for the advice in the secondary stage. If you feel like there is anything that needs tweaking at this stage, please let me know. Thank you in advanced.

Haha, pun intended, "head". Thank you @TeriyakiStyle, those are some good notes. I always worry about that whenever I start tertiary details. Because everything needs to be formed pretty well before it's set in stone with skin pore textures. No, I haven't tried that site actually. I'll look into it. I don't know about making it into a face and chest bust but I'll think about that one.

I've taken a few steps back and I've given the proportions another look. Hopefully now it's more accurate. I feel that his eyes aren't as big as they were before. I'm still not too sure about the skull and neck area though. I'm in desperate need of feedback on this draft for sure. I want to make sure everything is set in stone before I move on. Your feedback is welcome.

Okay, so this is a draft that is more closely sculpted, with the new proportions. I want to move on to close up details pretty soon. Before I do so I just want to make sure the structures and proportions look right. Once again, your feedback is very much welcome.

This is a beautiful!! Thank you so much for taking the time to put that together @oreoorbitz . Those are definitely mistakes I always make with the zygomatic arch. I can now go back to those areas and give them more realistic tweaks. Thanks again.

Now we're talking!! I thought the eyes were already small enough but I was so wrong. It's amazing how much realism I got when I shrunk the eyes down and painted them in. I also gave the crown of the head another look. Once again, your feedback is welcome. What are your thoughts?...

Your nose is too point at the tip, needs to be widened. Then maybe flatten the bridge of the nose a bit. If you need a paint over let me know.

I went back to the nose and re-shaped it. I looked closely at those images you sent me @oreoorbitz. Right now I'm experimenting with presentation options. Does anyone see anything else form-wise that needs to be tweaked? Are these skin details too much, or are the eyes too creepy? Are there any further suggestions?

the first attempt was way closer imo . I would start from there again and not subdivide so much the model at this stage. There is already enough good feedback , likenesses are super hard ! Good luck !

Eh. I don't agree. Latest attempt is a step closer imo likeness-wise, but anatomy wise it still needs work. I do agree that going lower in subdbiv would be good, even though the problem isn't the polycount itself it's more about secondary vs tertiary volumes. OP jumped way too fast into tertiary where his secondary/even primary volumes are still off.

Feeling the separation between eyelid/fatpads/zygomate a bit more would really help.

These three are shown pretty well here :

These lips don't really work. They are smudgy, corner is weird, fat pads aren't really working yet, planes changes are absent.

Female and exaggerated but at least you can see the basic planes that should be there, even on a male (more subtle, but still there).

Sideview ain't so bad.

The ears.. my god. These are really flat. Get some free 3D scan and look at how much movement and change of planes there is in actual ears. Ears are everything but flat, it's actually very clear from the front view that they need working. Look how much volume and movement there is in this drawings, versus your current flat version :

That jaw looks a that wrong too. Can we have a look from under? Did you look at how actual skull are from under?

It's a good start but needs lot of work still. Likeness are very hard. Keep going

That's good, one other person said that he thought the last version was closer. But personally I think this one is closer. Thank you again for the drawover. I appreciate that you take the time to make those @oreoorbitz. For my next move I'll go back in and make those corrections based on Felixenfeu's suggestions.

Okay, here's the next pass. I feel like this time it's really looking more like him. By the way, thank you all so much for keeping me from publishing a sub-par head sculpt, and thank you for your honest feedback. I feel like cheek/fat pad/eyelid area is more defined now and hopefully the ears look less flat. Please let me know what you think and what I need to do from here. Thanks again.

So you're making good progress, good for you for focusing on the major forms and seeking the likeness. I don't know how accurate you want to get it, but its starting to look good. I mean soon itll get to a point where I don't have the skill level to give suggestions.

Anyway, take a look at the image, and feel free to apply any of the suggestion. I also just noticed one more thing, are probably a tinsy bit too wide.

If you're serious about getting a good likeness, take a look at the portrait video by frank tzeng; https://gumroad.com/frank_tzeng_art. he's very good at portrait sculpting, so you'll learn a lot if have the money to spare.

Hey guys. Here is the next pass of work. Hopefully now the cheek bones look a little less intense. I'm still a little worried about the jaw area though. Please let me know if you have any critiques on the areas I mentioned or anything else.

Ok, so I'm probably at my limit at how useful my advice can be, since this is usually where I get stuck with likeness.
Now that you've gotten the facial anatomy plausible, your next focus should be the shape of the soft features. At this point you should break symmetry on a new Zbrush layer, this will have help sell the likeness. If you decide you want to get into details at this point, do so slowly, with symmetry off, and while always looking at reference.

It's okay @oreoorbitz, we all have limits until we learn more. I'll give these areas a look. By the way, you've been a huge help with your drawovers, so I wanted to thank you again for those. I'm sure you have a lot of things going on so it means so much to me that you take the time to make these for me. I hope to continue to see your comments on my work, although you may find somethings to say about the asymmetrical details.

Hey everyone! I hope y'all had a great week. Here is this week's sculpt critique pass. Hopefully now he looks a lot less malnourished, and squishy. I did a planar check on this forms to solidify him out. I also made those slight corrections that you mentioned @oreoorbitz. Please let me know once again if anything else needs to be tweaked, before I begin working on asymmetrical details.

This is looking much better now that you've smoothed out some of the forms! I think you are naturally exaggerating the shapes while you read them. I think the dip in the chin is exaggerated in this way.

Lots of good progress. I think the cranium shape is way too square when looking at the profile shot. I did a little PO to show you what I mean. i also took his face and moved it back a smidge.

I don't know man. He's got some pretty sharp angle breaks on his cranium. Bit of an inbetween maybe? Should definitely have more round and soft forms, but gotta keep the angles.

That's one image and the light is also playing tricks, not to mention the angle he has his head at. The head sculpt isn't looking down and the downward angle in the front is almost as steep as the image above. The likeness is getting there but the forms are just getting too exaggerated.

Here's another pass of comparison pics. Once again, I feel like he's getting so much closer and closer every time. I brought out his eyebrow geometry more and I gave his forehead another pass. His eyelids are more sunken in this time, and I toggled with the distance between the ears and his eyes. Please let me know if you see anything contributing to the likeness that needs to change. If everything is good than I'll move onto asymmetrical details.

Hey man, the eyes are looking good. Here is a quick paint over with some things I saw off the bat. I'd also reccomend looking for a new side reference for him. The one you have is good for the profile, but since he is smilling, and the angle isn't quite flat to the side, it isn't good reference for his cheeks and labial folds.

Okay here we are again. I've done some updates especially on the profile view. I switched to a different material and gave some more depth to the forms in the eye/cheek bone areas. Hopefully this is looking more like the image. This may have effected the front view quite a bit, especially with the eyebrows. Just let me know if you have any notes for this pass of critiquing.

I also found a different profile pic for the face. His face is much more neutral in this one.

Hey everybody. I've done quite a bit of work since my last update (most of it being tweaks in really small places). One of my connections says that his eyes may be the only major part of his face left that need work. What do you think of his eyes and do you see anything else that needs work?

He looks a lot better but the back of the neck is way too far back IMO. That picture is at a strange angle making his neck seem thicker than it probably should be. I liquified it a bit to show some adjustments I would make. I still think his face is too far forward along with the back of his head neck being too far back. I made his ear a smidge smaller. The camera perspective seems to make it look larger. Although I do think you pull the ears outward from the front view a little bit more.

So I did another liquify paintover of the front view. I tweaked a bunch of stuff subtly that I think makes it a bit more realistic. Mine is on the right. Your likeness is pretty good but it feels exaggerated a little, slightly caricature if that makes sense. I softened a lot of the eye creases as well as they look really sharp and harsh. The iris and pupils also look too large. I also softened his chin and jaw and shrunk his nose and tweaked the shape a smidge. It might be good to take my adjusted version, overlay it on yours in photoshop and just turn it on and off to see what I tweaked if that makes sense. Hope it helps!
