Hello everyone,

I started to model a turret gun. This is the concept -> http://meckanicalmind.deviantart.com/art/Auto-Turret-146072399
I have finished the blockout and started refining the bottom part. As you can see from the concept the bottom part it`s not very clear what is there so i came up with a system based on hydraulic pistons

Wondering how u made such clean smooth shapes ? Was boolean involved ? Can we see wires ?

@AXEL Hey man, thanks... My process is very simple: model everything in sub-d and where i need to attach 2 pieces together i use zbrush -> dynamesh ( but only if its a complex piece like chamfers intersects other chamfers, as you can see in the 2nd picture.

Pretty solid modeling, and the concept is really appealing, i like it a lot.

I know you didn't post this wip here to receive questions, but... I want to model a robot, and the concept really doesn't have those intricate and detailed mechanical parts (like the legs of your turret). How do you manage to figure such a functional design? I mean, do you have a resource to resort to when making those designs? Like books, tutorials, or you are really experienced in the field?

Thanks in advance, i'm really looking forward to the finished asset!

@Macebo Thank you dude. When i started to blockout, because there wasn`t much details on bottom of the concept i took the liberty to create another design. I have some art boards on pinterest, from there i get my inspirations and i really like hardsurface modeling. Thanks.

The high poly looks solid dude. The only thing I think you could add is a visual indicator for rotation function. You have elevation and position but can't see any indication of rotation.

Great breakdowns @s1dK ! We are, by total coincidence, going with this concept over on the monthly challenge. You should definitely cross link your progress there, if you want - these results are looking stellar! (PS love the zbrush workflow for complex pieces!

Looks great. Do you do any of your high-detail modeling (like the panels, bolts, etc) in Zbrush or do you only use it to Boolean? I'm not too familiar with using Zbrush's tools but doesn't dynamesh for combing objects completely rebuild the topology?

I`m not sure if i understand your question but if it is what i think you ask then yes, dynamesh will mess up your nice quad model and will turn into a very dense topology.
You will have to retopologize if you want a clean high but for me i just decimated that high dynamesh and made a low in 3ds max after.
And for the details i dont do all the details in zbrush, i keep some for substance painter.

Hey guys, i`m calling this one done, maybe i will revisit sometime to make another texture variation, but for now i`m done.
I had a lot of fun model this thing and learning in the process, thanks all.
Final low poly has 130.000 tris and 2x 2048 textures, rendered at 4096 in Marmoset.

Hi! Sorry for bumping the thread out of the blue, but I was wondering where you got your references for all the functional components of the turret? I've been trying to do it for the challenge, but since I have very limited knowledge of machinery I'm having a hard time adding detail since the ref is so rough, haha.

@GuanAndOnly No problem mate, i got my references from pinterest, just look for mech parts, industrial design parts and you will find a lot of working mechanical parts. Good luck!
