Hey guys as the title states I'm trying to work on my character skills. This is a WIP thread for me to try and get as high quality as I can. I've been rushing my chars and completing not so satisfactory work so crits and critiques are more than welcome!

Progress so far. Did a armor pass to see what all the gear will look like and how it will affect his proportions. Had to extend the legs a bit since the pants and cloth combo made him look a bit stubby.

Another Update. I am pretty much done blocking out all the gear and am starting to move into detail.
To match the concept I still need to go back into Maya and make a second beltstrap to overlay the chest straps. I also need to tackle making a belt around his waist and then tie it. I'm going to try my hand at splines for that.

So for right now Im trying to make his gear feel a bit more interesting. Working on doing a arm plate on his right. I bend the shoulder plate to contour his body a bit more so it doesn't feel like a wierd plate just chilling there :P

So far I think its looking pretty solid man, I don't quite like the shoulder pad design though seems just a bit off with the second plate on top of the first. Seems a bit unbalanced design wise.

@Nathanramsey Thanks man! I did a test last night to work on some armor or leather on the other side but It gets a bit cluttered. Ill Probably add a trophy skull or something on his left waist to balance things out.

Lookin nice. With that bug ole shoulder pad he wouldn't be able to raise his arm too high without touching his head though. If you're not concerned with that don't worry about it. Just a functionality thing.

@pmiller001 I went back and tried making the shoulder plate a more reasonable size.
I do like the way it looks this way since it make more sense visually. Still kinda miss the WOW styled size lol might keep playing with it.

Threw the skin parts into substance to get the skin feel down. I am going for a 2 toned skin. Lighter for softer skin and blueish for the harder rough skin.

I'm excited to see how you handle his gear. Like the colors on the character so far and It'll be great if you can get a detailed gloss map on him!

@Jose.fuentes Thanks alot!
@Green Pirate64 Glad you like it. I'm probably going to come up with some rough color schemes after I'm done the UVs for his gear. Might go for a more orange hue to the leather to contrast his skin. As for the gloss I'm excited to get back into substance and play around with that myself!

Started the textures on the gear. Been having some issues in substance where painting on overlapping geo weather on the texture sheet or the mesh itself will always bleed over onto other overlapping meshes. I'm still trying to find a tut on how to stop that but for now I used Mat IDs to get as close to accurate as I can for most of the overlapping parts.

material IDs is the way to go, but you can always try some other options for the brush. I think tangent wrap is the default, but maybe play around with the other settings and see if it helps.
also remenber you can paint flat on the texture sheet as well. (press F1)

@Lotet Thx for the tip! The texture sheet definitely helped with more precise painting.

Here are some glam shots for what I have so far. My next step will be to add hair and fur for his beard and gauntlets.

Posed and rendered what I got so far. I'm really digging this dude without the goatee. I'll probably go back later and add the fur and hair but I think ill call this guy done for the time being.

Skin looks VERY shiny, almost like hes drenched in water or oil or something. are you using colored spec on the skin?

Nah its just regular gloss, but it is kinda high and I have the brightness boosted on the lights
here is a variation with the gloss toned down.

hes looking good! the sub surface scattering seems a bit extreme like his chest even seems waxy. The lighting lacks contrast in shadowed areas, also I would expect some shadows under his belt and around his straps on his arms, are you using an ao map? there are some scratchy looking areas on the edges of the black on his belt, not sure whats causing that, is it alpha transparency making white edges perhaps?

@ged thx for the pointing the belt out. I didnt see that I just need to go back into substance and up the tolerance on the material ID. Ill play around with the shadows as well

Edit: Im working on getting the AO to show more so there is variation in the shadows.
