Maya 2016 smooth edge problem?

Hi there!

So I am having a edge smoothing problem

I have tried unlocking the normals, I am a little lost on this one!

The problem is your mesh topology. All those close edges "weight" the shading toward those edges, giving it that weird look.

It's best to avoid edges like that, except around an edge that's meant to be hard.

So keeping what you said in mind what would be the most efficient way to topologize these port holes?

I would probably suggest modelling the hull of the ship to your liking, and subdividing it, to give it a nice density of geo. Then I'd go and boolean the portholes in, after.

So the issue with just booleaning them in is it would give me a whole lot of Ngons.

I think I will just try to see how well I can optimize it!

There's something similar in the wiki, it's called a round inset (images from the Subdivision Modeling page):

Note the 5-edge poles that form a loop around each hole.

N-gons do not matter in high-poly, well not as much as clean modeling. Both wires are pretty messy. so clean it up if you do not wanna do the technique suggested before (the one i would do anyway).
Next to that your Retopo model is way to high ......no need to make all those circles.
