mudbox and viewport canvas 3ds max issue

I was painting in mudbox and I want a hard edge to my brush, like in photoshop the hardness would be 100. For some odd reason I get these jagged edges. Im painting on 2048 by 2048 texture size...any ideas

also in 3ds max view port canvas, as soon as I click on viewport canvas my texture goes very dark and i dont know why.any ideas?

Pixel resolution depends on your UVs and how close to the object you are. It could be you have a lot of wasted UV space. It could be you're really zoomed into the model, way closer than you would be in actual game use. It could be that you should use tiling textures instead of unique unwraps. Impossible to tell from the limited information you've provided.

in mudbox i only have the mesh at default level as far as polygons go. I didnt add any subdivisions to it. when i pick a diff falloff for the brush in mudbox to paint with, it comes out all smooth but im looking for the hard edge look...the png is 2048 by 2048...i took my first rock that i did with these jagged edges into photoshop and used a hard brush to clean it up and it worked...so im assuming the texture size is ok and not the reason for the jagged edges when i paint. so then i assume its a mudbox thing.. i tried added extra polygons to the model in mudbox because that seems to be the thing to do but its not like zbrush where you can choose to keep the shape while adding edges, so it just smooths my model like crazy but still when i paint on it theres jagged edges.

Why did you blur it out?

The UV layout is quite wasteful. And you have some overlaps (green edges overlap white ones).

The darkening might be gamma. Check your Preferences.

Also the lower resolution might be Display Performance settings (Viewport Configuration).

i blurred it out because its for work that im doing for someone. On the gamma point, why would it happen after I press viewport canvas and click on the diffuse layer that has my texture in it. ..I think my gamma is set 2.2

Viewport canvas was stuffed in max before they turned gamma on by default. When they made that switch it goofed up a lot of tools, it messed with the material editor, specifically normal maps, oh the seams...

They fixed most of the major tools but viewport canvas was never fixed. So it's a bug and at some point they will probably fix it... but don't count on it happening soon, it's' been a bug for over 5 years.

There are a lot of other apps that kick Max's ass. Zbrush, Mesh Paint in Modo, 3D coat, Mudbox, Mari even Blender is better.

thanks Eric, I clicked on the first link and read this. I read that gamma was suppose to be at 2.2 by default and thought nothing of it. The link had me change the gamma output ,input ,display to 1 and it fixed the viewport canvas issue. thanks again.
Hey Mark I was using mudbox to paint in and was having that jaggy edge issue , I dont remember having that issue in max or zbrush but i do remember viewport canvas in max not allowing pixel bleeding thats why i didnt want to use it in the first place. I do like zbrush for painting, its to expensive for me right now.

I have the opposite problem. After reading through these posts, i tried setting my gamma to 1, this makes the model have the correct color in the normal viewport, and in the viewport canvas. When i do some edits, and exit out of the edit, it saves the image and it turns darker in the normal viewport. Going back into viewport canvas, makes it even more dark, until it's practically all black, so i concluded that i needed to use the default 2.2 gamma eventually, but the image the viewport canvas saves for me when i create my default material is still way too bright. Any way around this? And am i making any sense at all?

Check the gamma setting inside your bitmap, in the loading dialog.
