Hi all, I'm planning on going travelling for a year and buying this laptop - https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/octaneII-17-Pro/
 - with i7 and 24GB RAM.

I'm going to be using programs like 3Ds Max, Photoshop, Zbrush, Marmoset, Quixel Suite, Knald, Keyshot, UE4, etc. I've read a lot of conflicting things about the compatibility of these programs on Windows 10, especially 3ds Max, but I wanted to ask if anyone had any personal experiences running any of these on Windows 10 before buying.

The laptop in question will have a brand new install of Windows 10 Professional, not an upgrade.
If anyone's had any trouble with compatibility, I'll be getting a license for Windows 8 instead, as I can't afford to risk my software not working properly, even though I've heard its not a great OS.

Thanks for any help!

Not me, just avoid special apps that modify windows features like sagethumb, that caused a lot of glitches for me probably cause it still hadn't bee updated to support windows 10's changes. Otherwise I've had zero issues.

I use photoshop, mudbox, blender, unity, clip studio regularly. And i've also had zbrush, UE4, and maya LT run without issues too.

I haven't had any compatibility issues in a long time. I will say though that I've found a terrible memory leak error inside the core of the operating system, which others are apparently having, and they have yet to fix.
The "System and compressed memory" process routinely occupies 2-4 gigs of RAM for no reason. It gradually goes up, requiring an occasional restart.

That sounds really bad, how occasional would you say?

I've been running 3ds max 2016, Photoshop CC, Muse CC, and After Effects CC on Win10 and have had no problems.

I had several issues with Windows 10. I screwed up my UI and eventually got a blue screen, had to reinstall it. Installed Windows 7 instead and am back to that. Windows 10 seems to be unfinished restricted and has many issues. I don't recommend it just yet. But it could be great in the future, that's for sure.

How did you manage to screw up the UI? Was that with tweaking the settings or through a 3rd party program?

I formatted my 8.1, reinstall, and up to 10 in one go. No problem with any of my tools.

Maya, ZBrush, Marmoset 2, Toolbag 2, Knald Beta, Substance, MakeHuman3D, 3D Coat, etc.

Maya, Max, Hexels, Marmoset, Houdini, PS, 3D Coat, Substance, Painter,Marvelous, Painter, Unity, UE4 all run fine on 10 and 8. I only ever had problems when I tried to run some on a laptop with old GPUs or with Intel GPUs. But it's getting better - even on my Mac's VM I can run most of these apps in Win 10 without major problems (albeit at reduced speed).
Win 10 is solid, if you have good drivers and solid hardware. I'm using it on Dell workstations and Apple Macs and the last bluescreen must have been 6 months ago. Aside from usability, Win 10 is imho the best Windows so far.

If possible, do a clean install of Windows though - many people with troubles seem to just have upgraded in-place.
Also, make sure to not choose "Express Install". Otherwise it's more difficult to turn off all the features that call home to Microsoft.

Stay away from Win 8 - make sure you have Win 8.1 installed instead. It's a free update. Same things above apply to Win 8.1.

Did you to do a disk cleanup - cleanup system files? Because that's the correct way to remove the old Windows folder. I admit, it's hidden in an unfortunate spot, so many people end up trying to change permissions and remove old Windows folders manually... MS could have made that one more obvious.

    Hello future-fiction!
Can you please tell me about your experience with Windows 10 ? Did you finally use it? Are you still running on Windows 10? what do you think about it? What is your favorite OS?
i am asking you because i have tested 3dsMax2017/2016/2015/2013 on several workstations with different OS and i didnt like the behavior of windows 10. I will have to decide what OS i shall choose. What version of max do you use?
    thanks, waiting for your reply.
