Polygon clouds?

I've seen some nice assets in the Asset Store for clouds, in order to create landscapes like these:

Do you guys the technique behind this? Cleaning photosources?

You can clean up photos or paint them yourself, but programs like Terragen and Vue can render out some really good looking clouds. I think Terragen even let's you render a mask that would make separating out the cloud easier.

If you have access to a fluid sim you can create and render your own. Allan Mckay has a pretty good tutorial on this
